The Barnevelder originated in the village of Barneveld in the Netherlands during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The breed was developed by crossing local Dutch fowl with imported Asian breeds, including Langshans and Cochins, to create a hardy, productive bird capable of laying large, dark brown eggs while also providing a quality table bird.

Although originally prized for its deep chocolate-coloured eggs, modern Barnevelders are best known for their striking laced plumage and calm, dependable nature. Today they remain one of the world's most admired dual-purpose breeds, equally appreciated in the show pen and the backyard flock.

Our breeding pen consists of carefully selected Blue Laced, Gold Laced and White Laced hens, paired with outstanding Blue Laced and Gold Laced roosters. This pairing produces a beautiful variety of chicks, with each hatch offering a mix of stunning feather patterns and colours while maintaining the excellent temperament and utility the breed is renowned for.

Barnevelders are gentle, friendly birds that quickly become favourites in the backyard. They are calm around people, making them ideal for families and first-time poultry keepers, while their confident but relaxed personalities allow them to integrate well into mixed flocks. They are excellent free-range birds, enjoying the opportunity to forage, but they also adapt well to enclosed runs provided they have adequate space.

As a naturally hardy breed, Barnevelders cope well with a range of climates and are known for their reliable egg production throughout much of the year. Hens have a moderate tendency to become broody and make attentive mothers when allowed to hatch and rear chicks. Their beautiful laced feathering, dependable laying ability and placid temperament make them one of the most rewarding heritage breeds to own, whether your goal is beautiful backyard chickens, quality breeding stock or exhibition birds.
